About Me and Skate Fitness

If, like me, you love to have wheels on your feet then you have come to the right place! I am sat here, writing this while sat at my kitchen table, wearing my skates. It’s true.

I played roller derby for 6 years (with a small 9 month injury in the middle of that!) and I loved it. The opportunity to learn all of the skills and spend as much time as possible on 8 wheels was the best.

Then I bust my knee.

Suddenly my skates were gathering dust and Doctors and Consultants were wagging their fingers telling me that contact sports are no good for 40+ ladies.... blah blah blah. But I still wanted to skate!

So I got to thinking; with a few roller derby teams within a 10 mile radius, there is obviously a demand for roller skating activities but what happened to those who, like me, used to play derby, miss their skates but can no longer partake in full contact? What about those who just love a good old fashioned pootle along the sea front but are fed up of not being able to skate with any regularity due to our crappy weather? What about those who just want more skate time rolled up with some fitness? Or what about those who want to learn how to skate without joining a roller derby team?

So I created a survey to find out the answers to these questions. And the response was incredible!

SKATE FITNESS WAS BORN!

After a couple of months of tweaking the sessions and using my mates as Guinea pigs (cheers, kids!) I have created balanced sessions that novices and advanced skaters alike can enjoy. I now have a beautiful, friendly mix of street skaters, roller derby players, hockey players, people who only ever skated as kids and absolute beginners, both male and female, who support each other while working up a sweat!

Don't take my word for it though - come along and join the fun.

UPDATE:

Skating regularly with Skate Fitness allowed my dodgy knee to get stronger and associated back problems to disappear which has allowed me to play roller derby again. Hoorah! I thought that after 2 years not playing I would be rusty, and yeah, I was. However, what I didn't expect was that Skate Fitness had actually benefitted me hugely in all of the non-contact skating skills which has ultimately made me a better player.

Win!
